Shredder 2.2: Does your hard drive contain business plans, financial reports, personnel
files, patents, acquisition plans, customer information, personal letters, credit card
numbers, or any other confidential or sensitive information? Did you know that using the
delete function does not erase this information?
When you delete a file in a Windows operating
environment, it is usually because you no longer need that file, do not want to keep it,
or do not want anyone else to see it. If you think that by deleting the file, the data is
gone, think again. What actually happens when you use the delete function is that Windows
changes the first character of the file name. This lets the computer know that it can now
use the space being occupied by that file. The problem is that, until the computer
actually writes to that space (i.e. writes over the file), that deleted file can be easily
recovered using any number of commercial and free software packages. Additionally,
remnants of the data can be recovered from temporary files, swap files, and other Windows
file system locations.
Shredder software from Infraworks solves this problem by immediately
overwriting deleted files multiple times with different characters, vexing even the most
sophisticated means of data recovery and making the data permanently unrecoverable. But
what really makes Shredder unique is its ability to work in real time within Windows,
capturing and shredding the host of temporary and backup files created by Windows or your
software applications. Because Shredder works in the background, in real time, you don't
need to remember to drag the file over to a special program for deletion like some other
programs - when you delete using your program or Windows Explorer, Shredder automatically
takes action.
If information on your computer is considered valuable, sensitive,
or private, Shredder software should be an integral part of your security solution. |
